Work with the Spool file Utility in IBM AS/400

Our web-based Work with Spooled Files application is now offered with Profound UI’s Rich Display or Genie module as of Version 5 for client GSK Consumer Healthcare. Instead, then replacing IBM’s tool for managing printer operations, this product’s objective is to make it simpler for end users to browse and print spooled files from their PCs when they don’t have access to a printer.

PUIWRKSPLF is the name of the command.

PUIWRKSPLF use in Genie

A typical IBM i command that may be executed from the command line in Genie is the PUIWRKSPLF command. The PUIWRKSPLF can also be included in a CL program and called from applications.

Like any other standard IBM i command, the PUIWRKSPLF command supports F4=Prompt and F1=Help. For comprehensive information on PUIWRKSPLF’s parameters, use the command help.

How to Use PUIWRKSPLF from a Rich Display Session

We advise including the PUIWRKSPLF command in a CL program so that you can use it from your Rich Display program as Rich Display Sessions do not offer a command line where you could write it. (You might alternatively utilize APIs like the QCMDEXC API to execute the command.) Even better, you can use Visual Designer to build up your CL program as the “initial program” or use Atrium to refer to it as a “Rich Display.”

The same as with any other CL command, you can access help on the PUIWRKSPLF command when modifying your CL program in SEU or RDi by pressing F4=Prompt or F1=Help. For more comprehensive details on the parameters for PUIWRKSPLF, consult the command help.

The PUIWRKSPLF Screen’s options

You can utilize the vertical scrollbar on the right side of the PUIWRKSPLF screen to browse the list of spooled files. Additionally, it offers a horizontal scrollbar (on the bottom) that you can use to view the additional features because there are more attributes than what can fit across the width of the display. By dragging and dropping the column titles, you may easily alter the order of the columns.

This is advantageous because it allows you to place the attributes you use the most frequently on the left-hand side of the display while placing the traits you use less frequently far to the right (where you must scroll to view them).

PUIWRKSPLF will keep track of the order of the columns you specify using the “local storage” feature of the web browser. By clicking on the column heading, you can also sort by any of the columns on the screen.

The settings below apply to the spooled files you’ve chosen. Choose the spooled files you want to work with using the mouse (or tap them with your finger if you’re using a touch display), and then click one of the following buttons:

  • View Text displays a spooled file in plain text on your browser’s screen.
  • Download Text: This action downloads a text version of the spooled file that you can store locally on your computer. (Notes Regarding Downloading Spool Files are in the section below.)
  • View PDF displays a spooled file in PDF format on your browser. (For more details, see ‘Installing PDF Support’ below.)
  • Download PDF: This option allows you to save a copy of the spooled file as a PDF file on your local computer. (For more details, see ‘Installing PDF Support’ below.) (For further information on downloading spool files, read the section below.)
  • Change = enables you to modify the spooled file’s attributes.
  • Release enables you to make held spooled files available for printing on a printer.
  • Hold = allows you to stop spooled files from printing on a printer by putting them on hold.
  • Erase = will permanently erase the highlighted spooled files from the system.
You don’t have to choose any files for the following choices:
  • Refresh means to reload the server’s list of spooled files.
  • Allows you to modify the parameters that determine how the double-click and view options function.
  • Resetting any sorted or relocated columns to their initial values is known as “Reset Cols.”
  • Exit signifies quitting the PUIWRKSPLF program.

A shortcut that says “view this spooled file in the default manner” is double-clicking on the file.

On the ‘Settings’ display, you can choose whether a double-click shows the spooled file as a PDF or Text document.

Choosing Several Spool Files to Use
